How are you currently involved with the Community Exchange Network?
Considering starting a CES exchange
What's the full name of your Exchange? Answer N/A if you are not yet an Admin or User.
N/A
Describe your Exchange (type of exchange, location, activities, members, how it's going)
We don't have one yet, but we are working on it.
Tell us about yourself, your background, interests, skills.
I am a founder member of the steering committee of Bay of Islands Transition Town Kerikeri. We only got started in June and so have a long way to go.
My background is 40 years in the insurance, mortgage and finance business in England, Canada, USA and now here. I currently, among other things, own and operate Paihia Taxis & Tours Limited which is, as far as I know, the only company of its kind in New Zealand that runs its vehicles on Waste Vegetable Oil (WVO) they are not "HYBRIDS," they are "FRYBRIDS!" My interests are in alternative fuels (especially alcohol) alternative currencies and and interest free finance. I am also very interested in turning every politician into an unemployed beneficiary (they can do less harm as an unemployed beneficiary than they do by being an employed beneficiary, as they are now.) I am also very interested in seeing every bank and gas station turned either into a musems or a mausoleum.
I have a dream, as Martin Luther King said, but mine is to see Transition Towns develop and grow to such a degree that by the time local elections are due in the Far North we will have alcohol as a fuel, an alternative currency and a full slate of "Transition Party" candidates for not only all the FNDC council seats, but also get ourselves a new mayor. And by the time the next general election comes around, the Transition Party will be so established that we will field candidatesin every constituency, win the election and run New Zealand as it should be run, by a government of the people, by the people, for the people, with a debt free currency of the same kind, not as today when it is a government of the bankers, by the bankers for the bankers with puppet politicians whose strings are pulled by big banks, big oil and big business. It is time, well it is past time, that the sheeple woke up to what is going on and I am convinced that the "Transition Towns Movement" is the only vehicle that has a snowball's chance in the hot place of doing it.

I loved your description. It is exciting to see interest in alternative forms of fuel and energy. My father uses oil from several restaurants to power his diesel pick up truck. He does not use a straight vegetable oil but modifies it in some way so that he doesn't have to preheat the tank and fuel line.

I never thought of having a Political Party based on a Transition Town philosophy. That would definitely address the problem from multiple angles.

When I was looking at different alternative currency ideas, what impressed me about CES was the already established international base of exchanges which can interconnect.

Book review of "The End of Money and the Future of Civilization", by Thomas Greco

Book Review: The End of Money and the Future of Civilization

By Thomas H. Greco, Jr

Published by: Chelsea Green Publishing, White River Junction, Vermont, USA (www.chelseagreen.com), 2009. ISBN 978-1-60358-078-6

Thomas Greco is the most radical writer on money today. The very title of the book suggests that the future of civilization depends on abandoning money-as-we-know-it. What could be more radical and revolutionary than that? Yet on readin… Continue

Introducing COGS

The Point of COGS

COGS stands for Circle of Gifts, and is a complementary currency specifically designed to help local communities re-localise activities. The aim of re-localisation is to provide inhabitants with the possibility of an acceptable quality of life when traditional economic development fails, or their circumstances are against them.

We believe complementary currencies will become more important as energy supplies dwindle and impact the economic growth so essential for inter… Continue

Mobilising The Real Wealth of Community - An Article by Alana Tobin

People around the world are increasingly concerned and even fearful about the present state of our economy and the real possibility of a recession turning into a depression. Having grown dependent upon an economic system which has increasingly failed us now our economy is in a rapid state of decline. As a growing number of people are losing their jobs and homes, many are finding themselves in rather precarious and even dire circumstances. Should the economy significantly worsen none of us likes… Continue

The Method by which the Federal Reserve creates money out of nothing;

The Method by which the Federal Reserve creates money out of nothing; the concept of usury as the payment of interest on pretended loans; the true cause of the hidden tax called inflation; the way in which the Fed creates boom-bust cycles.
