Hi Deirdre, In Cape Town our currency is a 'Talent' which is loosely related in value to our Fiat currency the Rand. I have an account in that exchange and I use that for earning and purchasing of goods and services. I also have an account in the...

Thanks for this John. I had a look at it and it also looks to be in its early stages. And how can I find out if the developers have a deep understanding of timebanking? There appears to be no enrolment form to fill out for security, and no communi...

Hi Deirdre You could check out Matthew Slater's Marketplace software developed on the Drupal platform. You can download it for free and try out time banking functions with it: http://marketplace.matslats.net/ Best wishes John Rogers

Hello I note that there are several exchanges which use time as a unit. I wonder which of them consider themselves to be timebanks as described by Edgar Cahn and all the websites on timebanks? (wikipedia says they are in 37 countries) In other wo...

Hi Deirdre

Yes, we can do quarter hours or any other unit you want. Just let us know. We've just set up a timebank in Dublin, Ireland, with a promise of many more to come in that country.

Hi Deirdre, It took me awhile but I did get an invite from you a month or two ago. I did see the email from Miles. I'm in the same boat - trying to read up on a lot of stuff before I go any further.
Will be in touch soon. Hope all is well with you,
Anna

Hi Deirdre

You can now view which exchanges are time based. Log into your CES account and click on the [Stats] button at the top. At the bottom left of the 'Statistics & Reports' page click on the '[View] Exchanges' button. This lists all the visible CES exchanges. There is a column called 'Curr Type' which shows the type used by the exchange (Nat = based on national currency; Time = time based). If you click on the column heading it will sort by type. If you want to see if the unit of account is minutes or hours, hover your mouse over the word 'Time' of the time-based exchanges.

Sydney LETS (SYCE) is not overall time-based, but all services need to be quoted as 20 Operas per hour.

Hope that's ok.

Introducing COGS

The Point of COGS

COGS stands for Circle of Gifts, and is a complementary currency specifically designed to help local communities re-localise activities. The aim of re-localisation is to provide inhabitants with the possibility of an acceptable quality of life when traditional economic development fails, or their circumstances are against them.

We believe complementary currencies will become more important as energy supplies dwindle and impact the economic growth so essential for inter… Continue

Mobilising The Real Wealth of Community - An Article by Alana Tobin

People around the world are increasingly concerned and even fearful about the present state of our economy and the real possibility of a recession turning into a depression. Having grown dependent upon an economic system which has increasingly failed us now our economy is in a rapid state of decline. As a growing number of people are losing their jobs and homes, many are finding themselves in rather precarious and even dire circumstances. Should the economy significantly worsen none of us likes… Continue

Credit and Debit Limits

Credit and Debit Limits

What are credit and debit limits and why do we need them in a community of givers and receivers promoting the notion of abundance? Surely limits create a shortage of the currency, taking us back to debt-based conventional money where those of us who are short of the stuff have to borrow it from those who have a surplus?

Credit and debit limits are absolutely essential for the health of an exchange. In the CES we do not impose 'hard' limits where the system stops… Continue
